        When Co. F, 7th Iowa Cavalry arrived at Julesburg in to build what would become Fort Sedgwick, they brought two smoothbore 12 pounder Mountain Howitzers, named so because of the weight of the unexploded fused spherical shell. The total weight of the gun ranged between and lbs depending on carriage size. Among these were Camp Rankin (later Fort Sedgwick) near Julesburg, Mud Springs near Courthouse Rock, Fort Mitchell at Scotts Bluff and, to the west, Platte Bridge and Deer Creek Stations. In the spring and summer of there were large-scale Indian attacks on stations and ranches in Nebraska and Colorado, disrupting all travel.
